The Kootenay Lake Historical Society is the custodian of the S.S. Moyie, the world's oldest intact passenger sternwheeler. The Moyie plied Kootenay Lake for 59 years - it is now a National Historic Site and Museum. Open from May through October, visitors are taken back in time when the board the vessel. Established in 1971, the Sidney Museum has served the community of Sidney and North Saanich since then. Run by the Society of Saanich Peninsula Museums, the museum promotes awareness of local heritage through exhibits, programs, and collections. Its permanent collection consists of over 6000 items. In addition to its permanent exhibits, the museum also features rotating monthly exhibits. These temporary exhibits include everything from an annual Quilting display, a Teddy Bear Christmas Display, and of course the famous 3-month long Lego Exhibit. The Society of Saanich Peninsula Museums is a non-profit organization, and the Museum is open to the public by donation.
