Haida Gwaii
A vibrant culture set in a dramatic seascape
Before arriving on the islands, visitors are strongly encouraged to take the Haida Gwaii Pledge and learn how to travel to Haida Gwaii respectfully. Visitors are also strongly encouraged to arrive fully vaccinated.
With moss-covered rainforest, windswept beaches, and ancestral village sites, Haida Gwaii exudes a powerful energy found in few places. The stories and living culture of the Haida Nation are deeply intertwined with “the Islands of the people,” a place they have lived in and cared for since time immemorial.
Located within The Infinite Coast, Haida Gwaii offers deep cultural connections and outdoor adventure, from Haida-owned expeditions to surfing, kayaking, and camping. Its unique microclimate supports an incredible diversity of plant and animal species. Groups of Sitka deer feed on the grassy clearings along Highway 16, and large convocations of eagles can be seen flying overhead in spring and summer.
This storm-battered archipelago of 150 rocky islands off the West Coast of British Columbia can only be accessed by boat or plane, which adds to its allure. The largest communities on the islands include the Village of Daajing Giids, HlG̱aagilda (Skidegate), and Massett, all located on Graham Island. Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve is located in the southern islands of Haida Gwaii, and is accessible by guided tour via boat or seaplane.
