Kootenays
Where mountain culture and outdoor adventure thrive
Snow-covered peaks, clear lakes, and cascading waterfalls define this outdoor recreation paradise in southeastern British Columbia.
The name “Kootenays” comes from interpreted name of the Ktunaxa Nation, who have cared for these lands since time immemorial. This is also a place of deep cultural significance to the Secwépemc Nation and Métis Nation.
Framed by the Selkirk, Monashee, and Purcell mountain ranges, it’s no wonder that this iconic area is the Birthplace of Adventure—especially since heli- and cat-skiing started here. In the Kootenays, small towns offer friendly, eclectic vibes and easy access to year-round adventure. Summer brings singletrack mountain bike trails, rugged hikes, and lake time. Once the snow flies, eight alpine resorts and vast backcountry areas invite boundless turns. Soak and unwind in one of the region’s mineral-rich hot springs any time of year.
Stay to explore, then head north along the Rainforest to Rockies route, where the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies awaits.
