U'mista Cultural Centre is one of the longest-operating and most successful First Nations cultural facilities in BC, founded in 1980 as a ground breaking project to house potlatch artifacts which had been seized by government during an earlier period of cultural repression. The return of the potlatch artifacts not only provided U'mista's name ('the return of something important'), and sparked a general trend toward repatriation of First Nations and cultural artifacts, it caused the creation of a physical facility and human resources infrastructure which have been successfully operated for over two decades.U'mista now operates a modern museum and cultural education facility in Alert Bay. Their operations include the museum, an extensive art gallery and gift shop, group tours, and presentations by dance troupes.

Sept 4 to Dec 20 2025 Carr House is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10-4 for self-guided tours. Wander around the garden, explore the house, and browse the gift shop! The Ladysmith Gallery hosts two art shows a month that are open to the public - a monthly member art show featuring a variety of artworks around a different theme from Vancouver Island and Gulf Island artists; followed by a 10 day guest artist exhibition. The location also features a curated gallery boutique shop with smaller artworks from over 50 artists. The boutique holds seasonal offerings as well. Other events that take place at the Ladysmith Gallery are art pop-ups with interactive art experiences, prestigious art exhibitions such as the biennial Fine Arts Show and late night shopping opportunities during the December season. Located in the heart of downtown Ladysmith, the Ladysmith Gallery is seconds away from local shopping and restaurants. A not for profit organization under the Arts Council of Ladysmith, it has a strong reputation for the largest and top quality of art from West Coast artists for over 20 years.
