Northern Rockies & Alaska Highway

A historic route through the vast Northern Canadian Rockies

The storied Alaska Highway in northern British Columbia travels through some of the world’s most dramatic and awe-inspiring terrain.

Set in an iconic area, The Great Wilderness, it is defined by boundless adventure, spirited communities, and nature at a scale that’s hard to comprehend. These are the homelands of many First Nations, each with distinct cultures steeped in stewardship and a deep connection to the land.

The 2,237 km stretch of the historic route brings you face-to-face with natural wonders, hot springs, soaring peaks, and vast protected areas—all while encountering Stone’s sheep, caribou, elk, bears, and other wildlife. Starting at “Mile 0” in Dawson Creek, the route winds north through muskeg and boreal forest, reaching far into the towering Northern Rockies. Here, Muncho Lake Provincial Park offers excellent fishing and camping spots along the long, jade-green lake, while the hot springs at Liard River is one of the most popular stops on this storied trip. Be sure to visit Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark, home to unique geology and palaeontology, including dinosaur tracks and fossils.
